Import Blogger posts to Wordpress

Published by TJantunen at 10:25 under General

My desk and coffee mugWhen I moved my entire blog into this domain and changed software from Blogger Beta to Wordpress, I faced a big problem, how I am going to move my posts from Blogger to Wordpress? I was looking for some Wordpress plugins to do that work. It was not a really tempting idea to move all my posts just using copy+paste method. Well, I did not find any good plugins to do that job (from Blogger Beta) . But I was not looking very hard after all.

But I discovered a very easy and fast solution to move all my posts+comments and categories from Blogger Beta to Wordpress. First you have to create account to Wordpress.com, creating account takes about 1 minute. After your account is ready you can play with your new Wordpress blog. We only want to import our Blogger beta posts so go to “Manage” tab and choose “Import”. Choose “Blogger” and after that “Authorize” and grant access to your Blogger beta blog. After that you just need to press “Import” and all your posts and comments are imported to your new Wordpress blog. After that, you have to do “Export” from your current Wordpress.com blog to get posts and comments to your real Wordpress blog. Export all posts to xml file and go to your real Wordpress blog (in my case http://tjantunen.com) . Choose “Manage” tab and “Import” then choose Wordpress, after that you just need to find previously generated xml file from your computers hard drive and that’s it! All your posts, comments and categories are now imported. And you did not need any plugins to do this.

I hope that this will help someone who is in same situation that I was when moving from Blogger Beta to Wordpress.

What is the advantage of Wordpress vs Blogger? Why go to all the trouble?

  2. TJantunenon 23 Mar 2007 at 9:09

I can customize the looks of my blog much more with Wordpress. And there is a lot of useful plugins available to wordpress. After all it is not so hard to move from blogger to wordpress, if you know something about HTML language.

Saved me a while setting up plugins :)

Shame they can’t include that importer in the software, since they obviously have it working.

Sounds like exactly what I need when I’m ready to make the move. I am curious, however, about one issue. Does the import process retain the original posting dates from Blogger?

  8. TJantunenon 29 Apr 2007 at 15:29

Yes, it keeps original post dates.

I have tried to move my blogger to wordpress and it works. Thank you for the info.

  10. Hi,

Ok…I just want to know some first steps….Do I first need to open a free wordpress blog, then I host it in a hosting company with the domain name I chose,…then go in those details??

Is that right? and if so please explain a bit if their something I am missing?

    Thanks,
    Roseate

  11. TJantunenon 27 Jun 2007 at 12:18

Yes, you have to open free wordpress blog. You do not need a domain for that, just go to wordpress.com and open new free blog. Then you are able to import your blogspot posts to that blog and from there you can export those posts to your actual wordpress blog.

  12. Ok…but then I want to get a domain name and hosting company for my blog…..will that be the next step? or will I need to host my wordpress blog first then import the posts?

As I see your blog is not “.wordpress” so it is hosted else where right?!

    Thanks,

  13. TJantunenon 27 Jun 2007 at 16:20

Yes, you need to get domain name for your own blog, if you do not want to use .wordpress blogs.

    Check out this post http://tjantunen.com/2007/04/25/benefits-of-having-your-own-domain/
From there you will find one hosting company and I am using that same company.

    Hi!

This was extremely helpful. I’ve installed and wiped my site 4 times and am on my fifth. Every time I use the import feature in my new blog WP dashboard, it imports the files fine–and wipes out my ability to do new posts, categories and manage posts.

I’m trying this method. Any other tips.

I’m keeping my fingers crossed and I’ll let you know!

    Keep it up.

Very interesting solution. There is also some online “blog backup” software which can do the job with import/export posts into other formats, not just XML.

TJantunen: yupp. thanks for your link, its the same with my article here :D

Though I have done this before, it’s not now working for me tonight :(

The error when I hit authorise from the WP control panel is on the Google side and says :

“The site “http://wordpress.com” has not been registered.”

Always like to see info on Cloud Computing! Looks like Australians are starting to wake up to it now with Telstra announcing a $500m spend this week on cloud computing services.
