I found this great plugin for Wordpress called wp-db-backup, which you can use to backup your databases from within Wordpress. You can set it up to save the backups to the server, e-mail it to you, or download it to your computer. In addition, if you have WP-Cron plugin installed, you will get a option for the WordPress Database Backup. Under Manage->Backup in your WP admin screen you will have the opportunity to schedule a daily backup of your database.
Another very handy plugin is the WordPress Automatic Upgrade Plugin. It does a backup of both your files and database, grabs the latest version of WordPress, disables and then re-enables your plugins and even puts your blog into maintenance mode during the upgrade. And this is not taking more than five clicks from you.
I used this plugin to upgrade my blog and it was a very simple plugin to use. And upgrade process was very fast too. I recommend you to use this great plugin when you are upgrading your wordpress blog.
Of course there is always the chance that the upgrade will fail, so if that happens you will need to follow the WordPress upgrade instructions to do a manual upgrade.
