Gzip Compression Rocks

Published by TJantunen under General, Make money online

Today I received an email from Luciano Passuello, a long time DBT reader. He basically told me that he was running some bechmarks on website load performance, and that Daily Blog Tips was performing very good according to his tests. The only point where it could improve was on the Gzip compression.

I wanted to test with Gzip compression for a long time, so today I got off my butt and did it. In fact the WP Super Cache plugin for WordPress lets you activate Gzip compression with one click (it is called “Super Compression”).

Boy, it did speed things up, so much that I could see it visually. How so? Before activating the Gzip compression, when I loaded the homepage of the blog, I could see the sidebars loading. After the compression was activated, I was not longer able to see the sidebars loading. You can test it yourself moving between the homepage of the site and the individual category pages. You should just see the main content changing, almost as if the sidebars were not being loaded at all. (This test does not work with single post pages because I have an Awever Javascript form there, which is not hosted on the blog)

Luciano also found the code that you need to add to your .htaccess file if you are not using the WP Super Cache plugin (source here):

# Turn GZip compression on (as per http://tr.im/fnn6)

<Location />

# Insert filter

SetOutputFilter DEFLATE

# Netscape 4.x has some problems...

BrowserMatch ^Mozilla/4 gzip-only-text/html

# Netscape 4.06-4.08 have some more problems

BrowserMatch ^Mozilla/4\.0[678] no-gzip

# MSIE masquerades as Netscape, but it is fine

# BrowserMatch \bMSIE !no-gzip !gzip-only-text/html

# NOTE: Due to a bug in mod_setenvif up to Apache 2.0.48

# the above regex won’t work. You can use the following

# workaround to get the desired effect:

BrowserMatch \bMSI[E] !no-gzip !gzip-only-text/html

# Don’t compress images

SetEnvIfNoCase Request_URI \

\.(?:gif|jpe?g|png)$ no-gzip dont-vary

# Make sure proxies don’t deliver the wrong content

Header append Vary User-Agent env=!dont-vary

</Location>

Keep in mind that not all servers support Gzip compression. If in doubt, email the support service of your hosting company.

If your server supports it, though, I highly recommend that you give it a try. It just rocks.

6 Powerful Principles of Persuasion for Influential Internet Marketing

Published by TJantunen under General, Make money online

Frank Kern, Jeff Walker, Eben Pagan, Mike Filsaime… These are all big name Internet marketers with huge audiences and million-dollar information product businesses. In fact, if you’ve been involved in the industry for even a short amount of time, you’ve likely heard of a few of those names. You might be a part of their email lists or buy some of their products. Whatever the case may be, you’ll find that these guys have one thing in common – they all make money by selling information products that promise the secrets to online riches. But is it really that easy? Where do these gurus get their “secret” tactics from?

Many of the Internet marketing courses and systems out there are very expensive – they go all the way up to $2,000 and more in some cases. While that’s a hefty price to pay, people are willing to give it a go hoping to make up the cost with the new insights that they learn. A lot of times these products do offer immense value. I’ve personally studied courses like Product Launch Formula, Mass Control, and Blog Mastermind and I came away with a lot of good actionable insights after each one of them.

The Source of All Good Internet Marketing Products

However, I’ve found that every lesson and teaching in the Internet marketing world is based on one foundational concept – influence. After all, marketing really comes down to influencing people to perform an action that you want them to (e.g. buying your product, subscribing to your blog, etc). But what does it take to effectively do this? Understand how influence works and you won’t need buy into the hype of every Internet marketing product out there. You’ll be able to think for yourself and devise your own strategies.

There’s a popular book called Influence: The Psychology of Persuasion by Robert Cialdini and it’s essentially the bible for all Internet marketers. It’s definitely a must read. In fact, all of the hyped up and expensive info products out there are based on this book – which by the way only costs $16. Cialdini explains that effective persuasion is accomplished with six principles: reciprocity, scarcity, liking, authority, social proof, and commitment/consistency. If you want to be successful in marketing your online business, you absolutely need to get each of these down.

In this article, I’ll explain how each of the six principles of persuasion apply to Internet marketing and provide you with some tips to immediately put them into practice. Just remember that this is by no means a Cliff notes version of the book. You still need to get the book and read it in its entirety for the full effect.

The 6 Key Principles of Powerful Persuasion

1. Reciprocity
It’s a give and take world – you give a little and you get some back. In any Internet business, you can’t expect to sell anything unless you provide real value to your customers. Furthermore, you can’t expect to keep loyal friends and business partners unless you put something into the relationships. I scratch your back, you scratch mine. If you want a favor, it pays to do a favor for others first.

Application: Give away value to your prospects – through your blog, newsletter, and free products (ebooks, videos, reports). Once you do this, people will appreciate the valuable content that you provide and reward you by buying your products or subscribing to your feeds.

2. Scarcity
Every Christmas shopping season there’s a hot toy that everyone wants to buy. In fact, the scarcity factor drives rabid buyers to pay hundreds of dollars more for a fad product. Remember the Tickle Me Elmo, Furby, and Tamegachi crazes?

Scarcity is extremely powerful and significantly increases the perceived value of an object or event (e.g. rare coins and collectibles, a chance to meet a celebrity, tickets to the Super Bowl). Use it effectively in your product launches and you’re more likely to sell out.

Application: Build scarcity into your product offering and marketing. Emphasize the fact that there is limited supply and that people need to act fast in order to reap the benefits. For example, if you’re selling an information product, package it with a consulting bonus (only X spots available) and a special price for a limited time. The scarcity component will force potential customers to place more value on the offer and act fast so they don’t miss out on a great opportunity.

3. Liking
Here’s an obvious concept that should come to you naturally – people are most influenced by others they like and trust. Build relationships, be transparent, and connect with your audience through personal anecdotes and stories. Be personable , both online and off, and build a following.

Application: Use various outlets to show people who you are and connect with your audience. Write blog posts injected with personality and opinions, create videos introducing yourself and explaining your thoughts, and be active on social media channels like Facebook and Twitter. The more you put yourself out there, the more people will like you. The more people like you, the more influence you’ll have.

4. Authority
In order to expand your influence, you can’t just be popular, you also need to be knowledgeable and act as an expert in your field. There has to be a benefit for people to follow you – and often times that benefit is to gain knowledge and learn from your experiences.

Application: Work on becoming a top authority in your niche. Share your ideas through a blog and back up your knowledge base with solid examples and case studies. You don’t need to know everything, but you do need to know more than your target audience.

5. Social proof
Like it or not, it’s in human nature for people to follow. We tend to look at what others are doing and flock towards towards what’s popular. For example, if there was a line for a restaurant that stretched 2 street blocks, many people would join in simply because of the social proof. If a lot of people are lining up to wait, the restaurant must be phenomenal, right?

Application: Highlight social proof factors in your business. If you have a high RSS feed count for your blog, prominently display it for everyone to see. If you’ve sold a million copies of a certain product, use it as a key piece in your marketing. If you get so much traffic that your server crashes, write about it and apologize for the down time. You get the idea. Sometimes it pays to brag about your accomplishments and popularity.

6. Commitment & Consistency
There’s no such thing as an overnight success. Internet businesses take hard work and only reach a tipping point after a big commitment and consistent hard work from entrepreneurs. If you believe in your site and believe you can be the best at what you do, never give up. You’ll have a much bigger sphere of influence if you prove to your audience that you’re in it for the long haul and aren’t just out to make a quick buck. This means you need to be committed to your sites and be consistent with your efforts.

Application: Choose a niche that you have a passion for and build a business in it for the long term. Make a commitment to providing value with your sites and be consistent with your work and your marketing. For example, if you want to make money online with a blog, choose a posting frequency and stick with it, even when you think no one’s reading.

How are you using these six principles of persuasion to expand your sphere of influence online? Are you maximizing your influence to improve your Internet marketing?

They are entitled by law and existing policies to practice their respective professions. They are worthy of the standards of their job, giving them legal licenses to practice their respective professions. Consequently, they are the “authorities” in their respective field of endeavors.

We will talk briefly about downloadable files, then the movie reviews. Use a search engine and type in things like “Movie Rentals Online”, or perhaps “Internet Movie Rentals”, and see what comes up. You will be amazed at how many sites are out there, try “Buy Movie Downloads” and see if you get better results. Is it Wrong for “Gurus” to Always Sell to you?

Published by TJantunen under General, Make money online

selling phycologyBefore I even talk about the subject of this post, I want to take a second to recognize one of the best Direct Response salesmen of all time, Billy Mays. Billy passed away last Sunday in his sleep. Billy is one of my role models and should be for anyone who is looking to become a good, ethical marketer. He promoted solid products and although he obviously used some well-known marketing tactics, he was an ethical person and one of the best Marketers to ever live! Rest in Peace, Billy Mays!

Now to the subject of this post. Almost every day there is a new “hot” Internet Marketing product that launches and if you’re a subscriber to any number of lists you know you’re going to hear about at least one of them, right?

Many people get annoyed when they’re pitched to over and over and over again.

While I don’t blame anyone for being annoyed when someone ONLY promotes to you and never offers free information, I want to explain why people like myself always seem to be selling something.

If you’ve been marketing online for a while this will be no surprise. This post isn’t to teach veteran marketers anything. It’s simply to make it clear to those struggling to make money online, so hopefully they understand that just because someone is trying to sell something to them, doesn’t mean they don’t honestly want to help!

Approximately every 18 days, sometimes sooner, sometimes later, I send out an email to my mailing list. This email is a promotion and yes, I want you to consider buying it because if you do, I’m going to make money. I’m not a liar, a scammer or a cheat. I’ll be the first to admit it. I promote products because I want to make money. It really is that simple.

BUT, there is something that separates the good guys from the bad and that’s quality! Nearly every day I receive email from other marketers with lists. Some of these people have small lists, while others have lists of 100,000 and more. These people ask me if I would like to do an “ad swap” or something similar. They don’t mention any particular products or anything else.

What is their goal? Their goal is to make money and/or generate leads. They could care less what the product is, how good that product is and whether or not it’s going to help their followers.

THAT is where most people go wrong and THAT is what gives people like me a bad name.

You see, there are very few people like myself, Mark Mason, Andrew Hansen, Jonathan Leger, PotPieGirl etc. who regularly promote products, but we are extremely critical about what we promote!

I simply will not promote a product that I don’t believe in. I’ve been contact by several VERY well known marketers who wanted me to promote their products. That’s kind of how you “get in” their groups. You promote their product then they promote yours. They were very surprised when I said “Sorry, this isn’t a product that I believe will benefit my subscribers.”

I burnt bridges but I kept the integrity of my list and that’s exactly why my list (in most cases) converts 10 times better than the lists of these well-known “guru’s”

The Moral of the Story is This

Not every product is for everyone! On several occasions I’ve received replies to promotions from subscribers telling me their situation and I’ve told them that this product probably isn’t best for them at this time.

I find good products and I recommend them. Whether or not that product is best for you at that particular time depends on what you’re doing. There are MANY different Internet Marketing business models out there. If what I’m promoting doesn’t fit into your business model then I don’t recommend you purchase it!

What I’m trying to say here is this: Just because someone regularly recommends products doesn’t mean you should buy EVERY single product they recommend! At the same time, just because someone regularly recommends products doesn’t mean they don’t have your best interests in mind!

When people like Andrew Hansen, Mark Mason, myself and other ethical Internet Marketers promote a product you can rest assured it’s an honest recommendation, but we would never recommend EVERY single person on our list purchase it.

Selling is part of every business. Be sure to stay away from the guys who pitch something to you day after day after day because you know they don’t find good, honest recommendations every single day, but don’t let those guys give the good guys a bad name :)

Leave your homepage alone

Published by TJantunen under General, Make money online

We often see that people use everything they have in the home page. What they do and what they can do apart from using huge amount of content. You will literally have to swim through the sea of content in the home page to find what you are really looking for. You ask any of the webmasters of those websites and they will say that as the site (the home page) is ranking well for a specific keyword, they are not ready to change or reduce the amount of content.

I am sure that you have faced such situations. Now think about your target visitors  – are they happy with your website?

Home page as a user-friendly site map:

Ideally, there should not be much of differences between a home page and a sitemap. If you are getting huge amount of visitors in your home page due to a better keyword ranking, you have already made a mistake. This will offer you less flexibility to manage the whole site via the home page.

For example, think about a situation where you are targeting keywords like debt consolidation, debt management etc. Now if the home page ranks well and generates huge amount of visitors for any of the keywords (EG. Debt Consolidation), you are actually loosing the opportunity to manage other keywords like debt management from the home page. On the contrary think about a situation where you have specific internal pages for each of the keywords or keyword groups.  You could well use the home page to promote your business model.

We use content to help people solve a problem. And in the process webmasters often mix the business model with the purpose of content when they use one of the important keywords in the home page. Leave your homepage alone.

Is this a problem? If yes, what to do?

A Productivity Experiment: Limiting My Online Hours

Published by TJantunen under General, Make money online

I don’t know about you, but every time my access to the Internet is limited, I become more productive. For example, currently I need to write 50 pages of content for a small project, and I had been procrastinating on it for over a week. Then yesterday my Internet connection died virtually the whole day, and as a consequence I managed to write around 10 pages. How come? There was nothing else to do!

And the curious thing is that I consider myself to be quite disciplined. Yet when I have free access to the web I tend to disperse my attention.

That is why I decided to run a small experiment for the month of August. I will limit my online time to two hours per day. The rest of the time I will physically unplug my ethernet cable.

On those two hours I will clean my email inbox, publish the daily post, and carry out any other task that requires access to the web. The rest of my work time I will spend writing content and working on business related matters.

By the end of August I will let you guys know how the experiment turned out.
