Three high school students team with NASA to solve spaceship problem

Published by under Technology

This next article isn’t really about a cool gadget per se, but it definitely inspired me to tell all our readers how to really improve science and technology. Hear me out on this one.

As Adrian Monk would say, here’s how it happened:

A Massachusetts high school science teacher recently put his three best students on a special assignment. They were told to imagine a world where some sort of spacecraft was hurtling toward Earth, and that it was up to them to figure out how they would record the event while onboard a separate aircraft.

The three students eventually put their heads together and came up with a way of doing what the teacher said. Then, the plot twist occurs, and the teacher is revealed to be a representative from NASA. He then took the students to Japan, and they implemented their solution to the problem. They even got to board a DC-8 and actually took photos of the Hayabusa spacecraft.

Sounds like some children’s story, doesn’t it? Like any children’s story, there is a distinct moral: Scientific problems can always be solved by kids.

Seriously. I would be willing to bet that if Steve Jobs were to give a group of smart high schoolers an assignment to create a better iPhone, they would have come up with a more decent version of the iPhone 4. Perhaps they could have figured out why it loses reception if you hold it a certain way.

Are You Promoting Quality & Safe Affiliate Marketing Products?

Published by under Make money online

Mostly, when an individual enter the online affiliate marketing business arena, he/she rushes to find great products to promote in order to make profits within a short period of time. Basically, the products you choose are the main things deciding on your affiliate marketing career’s success and this makes it really important that you consider a few crucial things before making the choice.

There are several affiliate products to choose from but the great ones are only those that are made considering the people’s needs and wants. Of course no affiliate product is going to be worthy of promoting if there is no one who wants it. What you do first is look for what people are actually searching and desiring to have. You should also consider your own interest as well since you cannot be successful in talking about golf when you are a hockey player. If you are interested in gardening then see what people in that market are looking for. Once your market research is over and you know what products people need, start your hunt and begin your search of quality affiliate marketing products.

You should also know that a good affiliate product would also be carrying a good commission percentage. Commission would vary depending on the product’s price but you should aim for 50 percent at least apart from products that are high ticket items. You should make sure that you are a part of excellent affiliate programs which are offering excellent services that means not only the products should be great but the services for the program’s affiliates should be excellent as well. This counts for extra services, support, newsletters, training, sales reports, etc.

Tiered structure is something that makes a good affiliate program having good products. This means that you would not only get commission over selling their products but also get commission for bringing in new affiliates and on the products that would get sold through them. Great affiliate products can be found easily if you simply give in sometime, once you have a great affiliate program, finding great products would be easier. If a product is offering relatively lower commission, see how much demand is there for it. If you see people are going crazy and demanding that product, go ahead and hit several sales making small but many profits and if a product has to offer an excellent commission percentage then research over how many can you possibly sell or if you can even sell any or not.

WordPress 3.0 – Have You Upgraded Yet?

Published by under General

The first stable release of WordPress 3.0 launched on June 17th. Have you upgraded yet?

The new version of WordPress offers some cool new features like a new default theme (Twenty Ten), which has been getting a lot of buzz. Also, the new multi-user functionality makes it easy for anyone to run multiple WordPress blogs from a single WordPress installation. I’m sure I’m not the only WordPress user who is happy about that!

So there is no doubt that the new WordPress 3.0 is cool, but are you the type of blogger who jumps in as soon as a new version of WordPress is launched? Or do you prefer to wait it out a few weeks (or longer) to see what kinds of bugs people experience before you upgrade?

Since upgrading became so easy when WordPress 2.7 came on the scene, even the least tech-savvy blogger can upgrade to the latest and greatest version of WordPress with a couple of clicks of the mouse (although you really should take the time to backup your WordPress database first — just in case).

So which are you — a Nervous Nellie or a Fearless Freddy? Take the poll below and leave a comment to share your thoughts on upgrading to WordPress 3.0.

  • Product installation
  • Internet security
  • Windows gadget
  • Compatibility with netbooks
  • Parental control
  • Effective protection from new and unknown threats using System Watcher
  • Improved Safe Run technologies
  • Enhanced levels of protection thanks to improved technologies
  • Rescue disk
  • Enhanced performance
  • Ease of use

Full details after the jump.

No Function Description and benefits for the user KAV 2011 KIS 2011
Product installation
1 Installation on an infected computer

New!

Sometimes a computer can be infected to such a degree that installing an antivirus solution is impossible, e.g. infection by some types of rootkits. In such cases, the product offers the user the option of downloading a dedicated utility that automatically scans the computer and neutralizes any threats. V V
2 Removal of incompatible applications during installation

Improved!

For KAV/KIS 2011 to run properly there should be no antivirus products installed and, in the case of KIS, no third-party firewalls. If these products are installed, there is no need to remove them manually because KAV/KIS 2011 lists all incompatible products and asks for the user’s permission to remove them. V V
3 Product migration made easy

New!

The range of functions available in the 2011 version of the products is dependent upon on the type of license. To increase the number of product features, all the user has to do is to change their license, with no reinstallation required. This makes migrating from KAV 2011 to KIS 2011 very easy and because the interfaces of the two products are so similar, the user doesn’t have to spend time and effort acquainting themselves with the new product. V V
Internet security
1 Safe Surf New! Safe Surf is designed to provide protection on the Internet by only allowing access to trusted resources.

When this mode is used, IP addresses receive a reputation rating based on whether they contain malicious code, links to suspect sites, the number of hits they receive, etc. Addresses are then assigned a trusted, suspicious or prohibited status depending on their rating. A trusted IP address, for example, is one that has a high hit rate and no malicious code.

When Safe Surf mode is used, KIS 2011 notifies the user of a resource’s reputation and blocks access to any suspect sites.

In KIS 2010, a database of malicious URLs was used to identify undesirable websites. In the 2011 version of the program the blocking of sites containing malicious code has moved to a completely new level.  The new version employs an additional reputation rating that provides information about Internet resources that a phishing and malicious URL database just can’t.

- V
2 Geo Filter New! The Geo Filter feature provides the user with an option to block domains related to specific countries. When activated, access to resources with previously specified domain names will not be possible. - V
3 Proactive protection against phishing sites

New!

The number of phishing sites is increasing rapidly. To ensure more effective protection against phishing, KIS 2011 proactively detects suspicious phishing sites and analyses information about each one (e.g. are there any tell-tale signs in the URL that are indicative of it being a phishing site). If such signs are detected, the site is flagged as a phishing site and access to it is blocked, even if it is not in a database of known phishing sites. - V
4 Scanning of data transferred via FTP

New!

As well as data sent via HTTP, KAV/KIS 2011 scans data transferred via FTP. For instance, if the user is viewing a page containing a link to an infected FTP site, access to it will be blocked. V V
Windows Gadget
1 Windows gadget

New!

KAV/KIS 2011 incorporates the brand new Windows gadget feature. This is an element of the interface located on the Windows Desktop that offers quick access to the product’s main features. This means the user no longer has to open the program’s main window to interact with its main features. V V
2 Main features of Windows Gadget Windows gadget displays the computer’s security status, allows a file to be scanned with a single mouse click, and enables an application to be launched in Safe Run mode (see details below). V V
3 Launching programs in Safe Run mode from Windows Gadget

New!

Windows gadget enables an application to be launched in Safe Run mode (a secure virtual environment that is isolated from system resources and where suspect programs and websites can be safely launched or opened). Launching applications in Safe Run mode is now easier than ever! V V
Compatibility with Netbooks
1 Compatibility with netbooks

Improved!

KAV/KIS 2011 is fully compatible with netbooks, supports the main screen resolutions used in netbooks (1024×600 and 1366×768) and has minimal impact on system performance. V V
Parental Control
1 Parental control for restricting children’s use of the computer and Internet

Improved!

KIS 2011 has a significantly improved Parental Control module that is designed to restrict the use of the computer and the Internet by children.

The Parental Control module now makes it possible to:

  1. Restrict the amount of time that a computer is used New!
  2. Block or allow access to specific programs on the computer New!
  3. Block or allow access to specific websites Improved!
  4. Control a child‘s email, Instant Messaging (ICQ, MSN) and social networking activities New!
  5. Control the launch of games on the computer New!
  6. Control the downloading of files New!
  7. Control the transfer of personal data New!

Features 2-7 are described in more detail below.

- V
2 Restricted access to applications

New!

Parental Control can restrict the access children have to specific applications installed on a computer, or restrict the amount of time they are in use. - V
3 Control over communication via email, IM clients and social networks

New!

The Parental Control module in KIS 2011 regulates children’s correspondence via email, ICQ, MSN and other social networks (Facebook, MySpace, Twitter etc). For example, a blacklist of contacts can be created with whom communication is restricted or blocked, or with whom a record of communication is made, etc. - V
4 Control over the launch of games on the computer New! The Parental Control module makes it possible to restrict access to specific types of games for certain users, e.g. in line with minimum age ratings. - V
5 Control over the downloading of files

New!

The Parental Control module can block the downloading of specific types of files. - V
6 Control over the transfer of personal data New! The Parental Control module can block the transfer of confidential information by children (e.g. home address, telephone number, etc.). The information that will be subject to control needs to be entered during the module’s configuration. - V
Effective protection from new and unknown threats using System Watcher
1 System Watcher

New!

According to statistics, a new malicious program appears every 2 seconds and detecting all that malware using only traditional signature-based methods is simply impossible. That is why proactive protection methods have come to the fore. They analyze a program as it is launched and block it if any suspicious behavior is detected.

The newly-implemented System Watcher technology in KAV/KIS 2011 monitors all system events in full. The information it generates is then transferred to the proactive protection component and is used to analyze program behavior. Thanks to System Watcher, the number of characteristics that are monitored have increased significantly (up to 50). In addition, the list of characteristics is now updatable.

V V
2 Removing the effects of malware

New!

Proactive protection involves the monitoring of a program’s behavior and the effect that it has on the system.  If the program is recognized as malicious, KAV/KIS 2011 allows the user to cancel all the actions which the suspect program managed to perform on the system.

A malicious program’s actions will be canceled automatically or with the user’s consent, depending on how the product has been configured.

V V
Improved Safe Run technologies
1 Safe Run for apps & files

Improved!

Safe Run is a virtual environment designed for running suspect programs and websites. A virtual desktop has been included in KIS 2011 for more convenient access to Safe Run. It allows all applications and websites to be launched automatically in Safe Run, as well as enabling the user to quickly and easily transfer any necessary files between the secure environment and the normal system. - V
2 Safe Run for websites

New!

My Safe Browser mode is designed for launching websites that require the user to enter their personal data (e.g. online banking resources). My Safe Browser mode can be used to create a secure channel for transactions that is protected from all external threats. - V
Enhanced levels of protection thanks to improved technologies
1 Reputation services that protect against new threats

Improved!

Reputation services are online databases containing information about:

- trusted programs and websites (white listing);

- suspect programs and websites (Urgent Detection System, or UDS).

Kaspersky Lab’s experts add information to the UDS database before it is added to signature databases. This makes for much faster response times when new threats appear.

The reputation services in KAV/KIS 2011 use the new Astraea system which analyzes statistical data concerning programs and website URLs and assigns a rating according to their level of threat.

V V
2 Setting a program’s security rating internally

Improved!

If the reputation services have no information about a program, various components of KAV/KIS 2011 calculate the approximate level of threat it poses. The user can modify the rating that is assigned and decide the level of rights that the program is granted by the system. V V
3 Rootkit detection

Improved!

Rootkits are programs that penetrate a computer’s system and hook system functions in order to mask their malicious activity. A rootkit usually begins running before the operating system is launched, altering the OS’s settings and concealing itself from standard detection methods. KAV/KIS 2011 includes anti-rootkit technology that employs low-level data reception methods which are immune to rootkit attacks. The anti-rootkit technology in KAV/KIS 2011 has been considerably enhanced. V V
4 Anti-spam protection

Improved

The intelligent Anti-Spam module significantly reduces the amount of unsolicited emails received. Mail headers, message content and graphical images are all analyzed as part of the filtering process. Those elements characteristic of spam messages are saved to Kaspersky Lab’s constantly updated anti-spam database. The new Anti-Spam engine in KAV/KIS 2011 enables spam to be filtered even more effectively. - V
5 Product self-protection from tampering or deletion

Improved!

KAV/KIS includes self-protection from changes or deletion from the hard drive of its own files, RAM processes and system registry records, and will also block any attempt to run the program remotely. The self-protection in KAV/KIS 2011 has been substantially improved. V V
Rescue disk
1 Rescue disk

Improved!

The rescue disk contains a range of utilities that can treat an infected computer when it is no longer possible to launch the operating system or use antivirus software. The rescue disk features in KAV/KIS 2011 have been considerably improved and extended. 1         V 2         V
2 Using the product installation disk as a rescue disk

New!

One of KAV/KIS 2011’s brand new features is its ability to use the product installation disk as a rescue disk (if purchased at a retail outlet). The user just needs to configure the BIOS to boot the PC from the CD/DVD-ROM and insert the disk into the drive. This means it is no longer necessary to create a rescue disk in advance or to use a separate computer to create one. V V
3 Copying a rescue disk to a USB flash drive

New!

In KAV/KIS 2011 a rescue disk can be copied not only to a CD/DVD, but also to a USB flash drive. The user can choose whichever is the most convenient for them. V V
Enhanced performance
1 Enhanced performance

Improved!

The major enhancements made to KAV/KIS 2011during its development mean a significant increase in performance with minimal impact on system resources. As a result, with KAV/KIS 2011 a user’s programs will run without any noticeable reduction in speed. This has been proven in tests carried out by respected independent test labs worldwide.
2 Launch of resource-intensive tasks during periods of user-inactivity

New!

In KAV/KIS 2011, any resource-intensive tasks such as scanning of the system for malware or updating antivirus databases are launched by default at times when the computer is switched on but there is no user-activity. This prevents the unnecessary use of system resources. V V
Ease of use
1 Updated interface

Improved!

The main window of the KAV/KIS 2011 user interface has been revised, allowing the user to get an instantaneous picture of the system’s security status. In addition, the most frequently run tasks can be launched directly from Windows Gadget without having to open the main interface window. V V
2 Notifications about product features

New!

Notifications about product features that appear in the main window of KAV/KIS 2011 allow the user to quickly learn more about the product and get the most from its features. V V
